In Lent, a Day to Rejoice!

Reflections on the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Lent (March 11, 2018): 2 CHR 36:14-16,19-23, PS 137:1-2,3,4-5,6, EPH 2:4-10, JN 3:14-21

Now, halfway through Lent, we pause to reflect in wonder on the joy that God wants us to experience during this season of penance. As we get closer to Holy Week, we become more mindful of His suffering and death and the ultimate sacrifice He made to unchain us from sin and release us from death. Today we are called to look beyond that to the Resurrection of our Savior. We are called to rejoice on this Laetare Sunday in God’s plan for our wellbeing now and always. “God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love He had for us, even when we were dead in our transgression, brought us to life with Christ.… For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance that we should live in them” (Ephesians 2:4-5, 10).

Christ Was More - and Offered More - than People Could Imagine

Reflections on the readings for the Third Sunday of Lent (March 4, 2018): EX 20:1-17, PS 19:8,9,10,11, 1COR 1:22-25, JN 2:13-25

After our Lord drove the moneychangers out of the Temple, those present demanded to know what authority He had to do such a thing. “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.’… He was speaking about the temple of His body. Therefore, when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this” (John 2:19, 21-22). At the time, this seemed like nonsense to those who could not see that Jesus was Himself the fulfillment of a New Covenant between God and humankind. Only later did the followers of Christ realize that He was referring to His Crucifixion and Resurrection. For the Jewish people this became especially significant when the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

God Is With Us - Always

Reflections on the readings for the Second Sunday of Lent (February 25, 2018): GN 22:1-2, 9A, 10-13, 15-18; PS 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19; ROM 8:31B-34; MK 9:2-10

What more can Almighty God give His people? He sent His Son to save us for everlasting life – at the cost of Jesus’ own life. God’s love is so overwhelming we can never truly comprehend His generosity, at least until we see the beauty and light of His Holy Face in Heaven. Yes, here are earth we must still face pain and problems. But, as St. Paul reassures us in his letter to early Christians who may have been confronting persecution: “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for us all, how will He not also give us everything else along with Him?” (Romans 8:31-32)

God's Unceasing Love

Reflections on the readings for the First Sunday of Lent (February 18, 2018): GN 9:8-15; PS 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 PT 3:18-22; MK 1:12-15

The season of Lent offers us the opportunity to think about our life within the Church – and within the thousands of years of history that God’s people have depended on His love, generosity and forgiveness. “Remember that Your compassion, O Lord, and Your love are from of old.… Good and upright is the Lord, thus He shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble His way” (Psalm 25:6, 8-9).

Lent Begins: A Journey of Three

Reflections on the readings for Ash Wednesday (February 14, 2018): JL 2:12-18; PS 51:3-4, 5-6AB, 12-13, 14 and 17; 2 COR 5:20-6:2; MT 6:1-6, 16-18

During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke of three important aspects of spiritual life that affect our relationship with God and His people. Charitable deeds, prayer and fasting have become key elements of Lent for Christians. Jesus respects these offerings. Yet He wants us to realize that if we perform them so that others notice and admire us for them, we have defeated the purpose of drawing closer to Him. “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms…when you pray… when you fast… your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you” (Matthew 6:1-2).
