God's Unceasing Love

Reflections on the readings for the First Sunday of Lent (February 18, 2018): GN 9:8-15; PS 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 PT 3:18-22; MK 1:12-15

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

The season of Lent offers us the opportunity to think about our life within the Church – and within the thousands of years of history that God’s people have depended on His love, generosity and forgiveness. “Remember that Your compassion, O Lord, and Your love are from of old.… Good and upright is the Lord, thus He shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble His way” (Psalm 25:6, 8-9).

However much we human beings have tested God’s patience, He has never stopped loving us, never stopped planning for our welfare. We need to look at the way we take so much for granted – and how we so often think we know best. We may not admit it easily, but it is difficult to put God’s will first if it seems to be in conflict with our own desires. Yet our Lord will never abandon us just as long as entrust ourselves to His loving care.

Suggested missionary action: Let us ask Jesus to help us follow Him in living our faith with attention – and intensity. Let us also our Lord to help us share His mercy with others every day.
