From Palm Sunday to Good Friday, the cries of the crowds around Jesus shifted shockingly…

Reflections on the readings for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion (March 25, 2018): MK 11:1-10, IS 50:4-7, PS 22:8-9,17-18, 19-20, 23-24, PHIL 2:6-11, MK 14:1—15:47

MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

On this Palm Sunday, we recall Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem for the last time. He rode on the back of an ass even as a crowd spread out branches and their own cloaks for Him to ride over while they shouted “Hosanna!” Those people saw him as a hero and healer, as one who came among them in the name of the Lord God. But by Friday Jesus would be a prisoner facing the travesty of a trial. And another crowd – probably composed of some of the same people – turned against Him. “They… shouted… ‘Crucify Him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed Him over to be crucified. The soldiers led Him away… and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on Him …and kept striking His head with a reed and spitting on Him” (Mark 15:14-17, 19).

The Only Man Our Eternal Father Wanted His Son to call 'Father' Too

Reflections on the readings for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary (March 19, 2018): 2 SM 7:4-5,12-14,16; PS 89:2-3,4-5,27,29; Rom 4:13,16-18,22; MT 1:16,18-21, 24

Almighty God could have chosen any man to be the foster father of His own beloved Son. He chose Joseph. This devout Jew was a simple carpenter and the one destined to care for Jesus and His mother Mary. Joseph would shield his family from danger and treat them with love and honor. By raising the Son of God as his own child Joseph let Him have an ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances. But before he did those things, he was confronted with a terrible situation: Mary, Joseph’s betrothed bride, was bearing a child. As a good and honorable man, he wanted to protect her with a quiet divorce. Then God sent him an angel in a dream, who said: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that His child has been conceived in her. She will bear a Son and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21).

A Grain of Wheat Becomes the Fruit of Everlasting Life

Reflections on the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Lent (March 18, 2018): JER 31:31-34; PS 51:3-4,12-13,14-15; HEB 5:7-9; JN 12:20-33

MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Today’s Gospel introduces a different group of listeners to Jesus, some Greeks who came to meet Him. And what He told them ranged from life and death to service and suffering. “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves Me must follow me, and where I am, there also will My servant be” (John 12:25-26). Christ wanted them to appreciate that life in this world is only our beginning. We are made for heaven. We are made to belong to Jesus and to embrace Him as our Lord and teacher. He explains that if we only look after our interests on earth and whatever gives us satisfaction in the present, we interfere with our God’s plan for us to enjoy happiness for all eternity with Him.
