MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Today we celebrate the angel’s announcement to Mary that God had chosen her to be the mother of His Son.

And we also honor the incarnation of Jesus, now human as well as Divine. On that extraordinary day two thousand years ago, this young virgin of Nazareth listened as Gabriel told her of the unique role she would play in God’s for the salvation of the world. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the Child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). The Blessed Virgin Mary, who was born free of sin by the grace of God, revealed the profound fidelity to the Divine Will that guided her whole life.

Before she became the Mother of God, Mary was a humble and obedient daughter of the Almighty. Although she certainly understood that the simple life she had desired would change in unimaginable ways, she never hesitated. God loved her and she loved God. And what He wanted was what she wanted – no matter the cost. Whatever the joys and sorrows ahead, Mary committed herself to the Lord just as she did every single day of her life. Each one of us can emulate her faith by doing only and always what the Father asks of us today.
