Today we worship our God, one God – in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Reflections on the readings for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (June 16, 2019): PRV 8:22-31; PS 6:4-5,6-7,8-9; ROM 5:1-5; JN 16:12-15

MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

As we leave the Easter season behind us, we venerate God in a special way by honoring the mystery of the Blessed Trinity.

Jesus spoke about Himself in relation to the other two divine persons who are one with Him. “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you to all truth.… Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that He will take from what is mine and declare it to you” (John 16:12-13, 15). This mystery is, in fact, the central mystery of Christian faith and every element of our belief emanates from it.

God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – is all love, truth, and goodness. More than that, we must never mistake the Holy Trinity as a distant, static being. Almighty God, who exists without beginning or end, invites each and every one of us into union with Him. Jesus came to welcome us into the divine embrace by breaking the bonds of sin and urging us to accept salvation by relying on His mercy and compassion. So whenever we say both the Apostles and Nicene creeds let us remember that we are affirming our belief in the Holy Trinity. As we offer the Creed at Holy Mass or as part of our personal prayers, let us make a sincere effort to focus on the each reference to the three distinct persons in our one holy loving God.
