Through faith, let us open ourselves to the mercy of Christ

Reflections on the readings for the Second Sunday of Easter (April 8, 2018): ACTS 4:32-35, PS 118:2-4,13-15,22-24, 1 JN 5:1-6, JN 20:19-31

MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Today’s Gospel starts on the evening of Easter Sunday with the Apostles gathered in fear, guilt and uncertainty.

Then Jesus came among them, offering mercy, peace – and the Holy Spirit. They saw that He was no illusion, but real and whole. Their Lord had truly risen from the dead. Christ also reminded them of their mission to tell the world about His gift of salvation. But one Apostle was absent from this joyful meeting – Thomas. And, when the others recounted the event, he not only doubted them, he doubted the power of God. Despite every miracle Jesus had performed and His promise to return after death, Thomas still demanded proof. And the next week, he got it. “Jesus came … and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then He said to Thomas, ‘…Bring your hand and put it into My side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.’ Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!” (John 20:26-28)

The apostle still known as “Doubting Thomas,” must have deeply repented his foolish lack of confidence, even as he spoke those beautiful words of faith. He finally realized what all Christians have come to understand – that trust in Jesus is never misplaced and that His mercy is always ready to forgive a contrite heart.
