At Jesus’ Baptism, we hear that He is the ‘beloved Son’ of our heavenly Father

Reflections on the readings for the Baptism of the Lord (January 13, 2019): IS 42:1-4,6-7; PS 29:1-2,3-4,9-10; ACTS 10:34-38; LK 3:15-16,21-22

MISSIO offers “Preaching Mission,” as a homily help, providing connections to mission from the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River marks the beginning of His public ministry.

While people went to John the Baptist to express repentance for their sins, our Lord wanted them – and all of us – to see something more. Christ Himself was innocent, without sin. So He accepted baptism in order to demonstrate His unity with His people and to exemplify the need for a humble heart in asking God’s mercy. Moreover, the essence of Christ’s baptism was the coming of the Holy Spirit rather than the immersion in the water. “Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased’”  (Luke 3:21-22).

Those simple, magnificent words addressed to Jesus call the attention of all people to this young carpenter from Nazareth who was sent among us by His Eternal Father. Christ came to teach through His words and actions that the boundless depth of Divine love leads us to everlasting salvation. As we continue through the Sundays in Ordinary Time we will join our Redeemer as he preaches the word of God, heals the suffering and performs miracles. Jesus also shows us how to be people of compassion and goodness. Let us resolve to follow Him with open and grateful hearts.
