Called to share our faith daily in words and deeds

Reflections on the readings for the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (October 11, 2020): IS 25:6-10; PS 23:1-3,4,5,6; PHIL 4:12-14,19-20; MT 22:1-14

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days

By being instruments of our Savior’s love, we, too, communicate His message.

Both Old Testament readings today as well as the Gospel speak of the abundance of God’s blessings with the description of a splendid feast. The idea of relaxing in a calm, beautiful place and while enjoying rich food and choice wine is a memorable image. Especially after one has undergone trials and suffering, it comes as a great and generous gift. In St. Paul’s letter to the Christian community in Philippi, he addresses his own experiences of poverty and plenty. “In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret … of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in Him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.… My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with His glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20).

Paul wants these people whom he had converted and who certainly meant a great deal to him, to understand that he truly appreciates their gift. It is important not only because their money can be put to good use, but also because it is an expression of their belief in Christ and their concern for him. He wants these good and loyal disciples of our Lord to know that he will do whatever He asks of him, whatever the circumstances. Paul trusts in God to reward him for his fidelity and ceaseless work to spread the news of Jesus Christ crucified and risen. As Catholics in the twenty-first century, we are also called to share our faith through our daily words and deeds. By being instruments of our Savior’s love, we, too, communicate His message. And we can also resolve to assist those who have committed themselves to serving in distant places and showing God’s mercy to those whose bodies and souls sorely are in need of help and hope

Suggested missionary action:  In anticipation of World Mission Sunday next week, let us offer some special sacrifice. We could fast from a meal, or give up something we want, and then send an offering to the Pope’s missions along with our prayers.
