We are the beloved children of the Holy Trinity

Reflections on the readings for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (May 27, 2018): DT: 4:32-34, 39-40; PS 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22; ROM 8:14-17; MT 28:16-20

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Jesus came to teach us, to show us that God did not just create us, did not just make us to be His people, but to be His children.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if only we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:16-17). The Old Testament reveals God’s love and concern for us, but only with the coming of Jesus to save us from sin and death could we grasp in any real sense the immensity of this love.

As we venerate the Holy Trinity today, we acknowledge the unending and unchanging love of three persons in one God. Because God sent His Son as our Redeemer, we are called to become His adopted children. We believe that God made us to know, love and serve Him. But we must also understand that He knows, loves and serves us every moment of our lives. It is up to us to recognize and appreciate the mercy and generosity of God – Father Son and Holy Spirit – and to open ourselves to His goodness and compassion as we journey from time into eternity.

Suggested missionary action:  We can take time to contemplate the great gift of salvation that comes to us through the will of the Father, the grace of the Holy Spirit and the sacrifice of the Son – One God in three persons.
