The relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit begins our own life as sons and daughters of the Infinite and Almighty God

Reflections on the readings for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (May 30, 2021): DT 4:32-34,39-40; PS 33:4-5,6,9,18-19,20,22; ROM 8:14-17; MT 28:16-20

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

While we human beings can never really understand this mystery here during our earthbound lives, we can use our faith in God to come closer to a deeper meaning of the Trinity.

In the first reading for this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we hear Moses urging the Hebrew people to better appreciate how God had selected them to have a special bond with Him. His time with them was coming to an end and they needed to entrust themselves wholly to God. In the Gospel we hear Jesus giving His followers directions also. However, He makes a point of telling them that He will be with them – always. Moses was leaving his beloved people in God’s hands. Christ, too, left His people in God’s hands. But the hands were His own, because He is the Son of God and One with the Father and the Holy Spirit. For most of the liturgical year we concentrate on the life of Jesus, our Savior. While we certainly worship God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit every day and acknowledge that there is one God in three Persons, we tend not to contemplate the Divinity as deeply as we should. While we human beings can never really understand this mystery here during our earthbound lives, we can use our faith in God to come closer to a deeper meaning of the Trinity.

St. Paul tells us that, “Those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God. … The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with Him so that we may be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:14, 16-17). The relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is the beginning of our own life as sons and daughters of the Infinite and Almighty God. God is love. God is truth. And God calls us, one by one, to belong to Him, now and in eternity, as His precious adopted children. And that, too, is a mystery of incomprehensible compassion.

Suggested missionary action:  Let us make a special effort to honor the Holy Trinity by making the Sign of the Cross with attention and devotion. We can do this at the start and end of our daily prayers, when we enter and leave church, and whenever we want to ask God’s help in a moment of particular need.
