Almighty God will indeed make all things new

Reflections on the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter (May 19, 2019): ACTS 14:21-27; PS 145:8-9,10-11,12-13; REV 21:1-5; JN 13:31-33,34-35

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days

Just as Jesus speaks in today’s Gospel about the glorious unity between the Father and Son, the reading from Revelation describes what that love means to us.

“Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be His people and God Himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away” (Revelation 21:3-4). God calls us to love because He is love. And our eternity with the Almighty – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – will unceasingly express the beauty and joy of His deep personal affection for each of us.

The old will give way to the new and whatever problems or pain we endure on earth will dissolve in God’s presence. And that will be true for all who embrace His forgiveness and share His mercy here on earth. Everyone who ever lived is welcome to the wonder that is heaven. But it is up to us to choose how we will respond to our Lord’s gracious invitation.

Suggested missionary action:  Let us reach out to someone who is suffering in body or soul. We can offer them comfort not only through words, but also in some practical way, such as sharing a meal, running an errand, or simply spending time with them. Reach out also to someone suffering half a world away, in prayer and support.
