God’s Mother is our own, both now and in eternity

Reflections on the readings for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (January 1, 2019): NM 6:22-27; PS 67:2-3,5,6,8; GAL 4:4-7; LK 2:16-21

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

The generosity of God for His people is truly beyond our comprehension.

On this Holy Day we contemplate the wondrous gift He gives us in the person of His mother. The Father sent His beloved Son among us to save us from sin and death. More than that, He wants us to understand to the best of our human comprehension the boundless love He has for each of us. Almighty God not only let His Son sacrifice Himself for our salvation, He also gave us His mother to be our mother as well. St. Paul assures us that we are God’s precious adopted children. “God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son then also an heir, through God” (Galatians 4:6-7). And today we rejoice in calling Mary our mother, even as we have the privilege of calling God our Father.

On Christmas, we thanked God for the Holy Infant born to reveal Himself to us as our teacher, our brother, our Redeemer. Today, we look to the Blessed Virgin as the Mother of God and mother of all His children. God always offers us far more than we can ever anticipate, ever even imagine.

Suggested missionary action: We can honor the Mary the Mother of God as we start the New Year by saying a World Mission Rosary. We can also make a resolution to say one each week during 2019.
