Let us welcome God’s children in our lives and in our faith

Reflections on the readings for the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (October 7, 2018): GN 2:18-24; PS 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6; HEB 2:9-11; MK 10:2-16

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Jesus always showed great care for the most vulnerable among His people.

He particularly wanted those who heard Him to develop a new way of thinking about God, about themselves, and about each other. We must end the self-centeredness and desire for power and privilege that can sometimes dominate human life. Christ made His concerns clear. “And people were bringing children to Him that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this He became indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to Me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these’” (Mark 10:13-14).

The kingdom of God is our true home. And our Lord asks us to build it up with along with Him, for our own welfare and that of all people. Christ came to teach us how to love just as He loves and to offer mercy just as He offers mercy. We can start by caring for the children in our own lives and communities. We can make sure they know how much God cherishes them and wants them to return His love, rejoice in His love, and give His love to others. We can also ask our Savior to help us be humble, generous and faithful in all we do every day.

Suggested missionary action: We can assist parish efforts to share our faith with children, either as teachers or through other regular support. And we can assist the efforts in the Pope's missions to help children with our prayers and financial help.

October is Mission Month.
