Not as a Conqueror, But as a Servant

Reflections on the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Advent (December 24, 2017): 2 SM 7:1-5, 8B-12, 14A, 16; PS 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29; ROM 16:25-27; LK 1:26-28

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Almighty God fulfills His promises.

During Advent, we have had the opportunity to see how His plans for our welfare were realized through His own Son. Jesus came among us as the long-awaited Messiah of the Jewish people – and all people. He did not come, as some had expected, as a conqueror or a leader to throw off the shackles of foreign invaders. He did not come to gain anything for Himself, but rather to give everything for our sake. “I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant: Forever will I confirm your posterity and establish your throne for all generations.… He shall say of Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock, my Savior’” (Psalm 89:4-5, 27).

God constantly surprises us and gives us more than we can possibly expect. He also transforms our world through the immensity of the loving mercy that led His Son to sacrifice Himself for us.

Suggested missionary action:  Let us emulate God’s generosity on this Fourth Sunday of Advent (and Christmas Eve), by helping those in need. Let us express our faith by offering our generous aid to His people near and far.
