'Guide Me, Lord'

Reflections on the readings for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (January 21, 2018): JON 3:1-5, 10; PS 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 COR 7:29-31; MK 1:14-20

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

Today’s readings emphasize how much God wants us to open ourselves to His grace and His will. Our Lord seeks our welfare here and now – and wants us to accept His gift of life everlasting. By making our Lord the priority of our life, we become His beloved disciples. “Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior” (Psalm 25:4-5).

We need to recognize that conversion is not only for those who do not yet know Christ. If we who call ourselves His followers do not truly entrust our hearts to our Lord, we will never really learn His way of life or appreciate His mercy. We must let Jesus transform us in order to deepen our relationship with Him and to help others grow closer to Him as well. Let us never take our faith for granted, but rather ask God’s constant guidance.

Suggested missionary action:  Let us offer prayer and material support for the work of the Pope's missions. Let us also resolve to learn more about our faith by reading the Gospels and religious literature.
