The Heart Rules

Reflections on the readings for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (February 11, 2018): LV 13:1-2, 44-46; PS 32:1-2, 5, 11; 1 COR 10:31-11:1, 22-23; MK 1:40-45

MISSIO offers “Mission In Scripture” to nurture a missionary heart, providing reflections on the missionary themes in the readings of Sundays, Feast Days and Holy Days.

During His ministry, Christ let people know that rules about clean and unclean food were not vital. Rather, what is in people’s hearts, what they say and do shows their holiness. St. Paul wants the early Christians to understand this. But he also wants them to believe that for Jesus charity is paramount. That means respecting the beliefs of others and building unity within the community. “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense…just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:31-33, 11:1).

Our Lord expects us to grasp that we must not allow beliefs, no matter how valid, to cause scandal or create rifts between others and ourselves. Respect and love are essential to Christian life. We must avoid self-righteousness and emulate Jesus’ humble and generous concern for others – whoever and wherever they are.

Suggested missionary action:  We need to spend time over the next few days considering how to grow closer to Christ during Lent. We can start by choosing some spiritual reading to assist our efforts.
